Several of us in the office were born in Salford (including Linda) and over 60% of our candidates are born and bred Salfordians. If, like us, you share an interest in looking back at how times have changed, particularly on our streets, take a look at this new Exhibition which is about to start at the Manchester Art Gallery.
Photographer Shirley Baker was born in Salford in 1932 and was one of Britain’s most compelling yet underexposed social documentary photographers. Her street photography of working-class inner city areas observes visual humour but also compassion for the ordinary people of our communities in Salford and Manchester from 1961 to 1981.
Shirley’s photographs capture the serious, the funny, the sublime and the ridiculous whilst conveying her affection and empathy for her subjects.
The Exhibition is free to enter and if you haven’t visited Manchester Art Gallery in the past you should make a note to see this snapshot of life experiences.
Shirley Baker: Women and Children; and Loitering Men
Starts Friday 19th May 2017 to Monday 28th August 2017.
