Writing your CV can be a very difficult task, you want to include as much information as possible and sound as attractive to employers as you can be but without it sounding boring. We have put together a few tips that we think can help you write a CV which could land you that dream role.

Tip 1:  Be concise.

There is nothing worse for an employer than reading a CV which is dragging on unnecessarily.  By being too ‘wordy’ you could be damaging your chances of being invited for interview, even if your experience is brilliant.  The perfect CV is one which is clear, easy on the eye and full of great information without being padded out by unneeded sentences.

Tip 2:  Bullet point your duties.

This is something that a lot of people do not do on their CV.  An employer wants to pick up a CV and instantly be able to pull out the details that they are interested in, they want to know what you have done in your previous roles and see if you have the necessary skills and experience to suit the role in question.  By bullet pointing, it makes it easier for those recruiting to decide if they would like to know more about you.  Don’t worry about missing out further details when bullet pointing- the employer will ask you to expand and will ask questions during the interview.

Tip 3:  Do not lie!

Do not lie on your CV or even exaggerate.  It is easy for an employer to see if you have lied on your CV, they will often ask you questions to test you and see if you have been truthful on your CV. If it becomes clear that you have indeed lied then it could be a rather embarrassing situation for you.  A lot of people tell fibs on the hobbies section of their CV, for example: saying they are an avid reader when they are not.  Although the hobbies may not be directly linked to the role, an employer may ask you about them and if you haven’t been truthful it could suggest to them they you are not a trustworthy person, and therefore not suitable for the position.

Tip 4: Most recent position at the top.

It is easier for employers when applicants have their most recent position clearly positioned at the top of their CV. This means they can quickly look at your most recent/current role and see if you could be in the position to move on to the role that they are advertising for, it is difficult when they have to start searching through your experience to find the information they are looking for, especially when it is not clearly ordered and dated.
